My siblings, spouse, and children have know that I’m pagan for some time. Recently my sister-in-law was let in the circle… and her boyfriend, and my nephews. But now I find myself stepping out – in a big way – through play.
Dear Sis-in-law built a group of people who like to play sword fight – in character. Ok get your laugh on – lol, I know - but don’t stop reading just yet…
Sis-in-law developed a character and was telling me all about it when she asked if I’d like to play. Then in the next breath she suggested that I be the group’s High Priestess. No pause – like she was concerned that if she took a breath I’d laugh her out of the room. Which might have happened… but she got me thinking instead. I don’t know about the formal title “High Priestess” but I agreed to be the group witch – until further notice.
That was at Yuletide.
So this weekend we are hosting a get together for this growing group of people. They’ll all show up at my house with the understanding that I am a witch… or at least playing one. I feel oddly naked being out of my comfy closet – and wonderfully free too. It’s a unique mix of emotions.
There is one character in our little group who belittles magic in obnoxious ways. He calls himself a scholar and has bean bag magic spells that ’cause’ temporary paralysis to anyone they land on. But so far his bean bags of doom have yet to materialize.
I offer a magic potion that relieves thirst, dizziness, shortness of breath, and red face – its water. That’s the kind of magic I’m bringing to the gatherings – oh and blessings before battles and meals. It’s low-key, easy, and best of all; it’s real magic that I really mean to cast. With Beltane on the way I’m wondering what kind of fertility spell I can cast on my group of heathens. It’s a wonderful thing… this existence mostly out of the closet!
I imagine after this little get together there will be less question about the real me vs. character me. It’s a blurry line to begin with. It may even dissolve completely and that would be just fine!
Enjoy this last bit of spring (fall, for those of you down under) for the change of seasons is upon us. Beltane fires are coming….
